The numerical section of a civil service exam is not a math class in disguise — it is a speed-and-accuracy test built on skills you already met by the end of secondary school. You are asked to read a short scenario, pull the right numbers out of it, run a clean two- or three-step calculation, and move on before the clock costs you the next question. The math is rarely hard; the pace and the traps are what separate a strong score from a middling one.

A Worked Example: The Percentage-Base Trap

One worked method is worth ten memorised rules, so here is the trap that catches more test-takers than any other, walked one step at a time. The question:

A department's open caseload rises from 80 files to 100 files in a month. By what percentage did the caseload increase? The next month it falls back to 80 — is that the same percentage in reverse?

  1. Name the base before you touch the numbers

    Percentage-change is always measured against where you started. For the increase, the starting point — the base — is the original 80 files, not the new 100. Naming the base first is the whole game.

  2. Find the size of the change

    The caseload moved by 100 − 80 = 20 files. Hold that number; it is the numerator, but only once it sits over the right base.

  3. Divide the change by the base, not by the new total

    20 ÷ 80 = 0.25 = a 25% increase. Dividing by 100 instead gives 20% — and that wrong 20% will be sitting right there in the answer choices, waiting for anyone who grabbed the bigger, more obvious number.

  4. Check the reverse — same files, different base

    Falling from 100 back to 80 is 20 ÷ 100 = 20%, a 20% decrease. Same 20 files, but the base is now 100, so a 25% rise does not undo as a 25% fall. Percentage-of and percentage-change never share a base — this is exactly why the topic map above flags it.

  5. Confirm against the options

    You expected 25%; if the choices are 20%, 25%, 80% and 125%, you can see the two distractors were built from the wrong base and the raw ratio. Matching your answer to the trap it dodged is the fastest sanity check you have.

Read the stem for the base, do the arithmetic on paper, then look for the distractor that used the wrong base. That one loop clears most numerical items.
